Cortland Native And Former Legislator Tom Hartnett Passes From Cancer

Local News

It’s with heavy hearts that we report to you that Cortland lost a great man yesterday (February 6).

Longtime Cortland County legislator and owner of Frank and Mary’s Diner Tom Hartnett passed away just before 12:30 yesterday afternoon, surrounded by family and friends after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Tom’s wife Cindy and son Joshua made the announcement yesterday on his Facebook page and added “we would like to thank everyone for their unending support and for letting Tom light up everyone’s life like he did for us.”

Tom was a Cortland native, graduating from Cortland High School in 1976. He spent more than a decade as a County legislator and also chaired several committees.

He was also known for his many hours of volunteering at places like St. Mary’s School.

Despite being born with only one arm, Tom never held himself back from doing and accomplishing. He even traveled all over the country competing at different golf courses and outplaying many of those who were up against him.

County flags will be at half staff today at the Cortland County Office Building in his memory.
