Huey Lewis & The News have signed a new recording contract with BMG to release their upcoming 10th studio album this spring. Huey Lewis said in the press release announcing the new deal: “We’re very excited about our new album, and honestly feel that it’s among our best work — we cannot wait to get it out to fans! We’re equally excited to be with BMG, whose reputation as a ‘music-first’ label precedes them admirably.”
The new-unamed album marks the band’s first new studio set since 2010’s covers collection Soulsville. The band’s last collection of original material was 2001’s Plan B.
BMG’s executive vice president John Loeffler added: “In the time we’ve grown closer with Huey and the band it became clear that this is a perfect match. We’re thrilled to welcome Huey Lewis & The News and proud to call BMG their new label home. We look forward giving the band more opportunities to take advantage of all we have to offer and working alongside them to develop some new creative endeavors.”
The news of the new record deal comes less than a year after Huey Lewis lost a substantial amount of his hearing after contracting Meniere’s disease. At the time, Lewis, who has appeared on stage only once since April, said in a message to fans, “Although I can still hear a little, one on one, and on the phone, I can’t hear music well enough to sing. The lower frequencies distort violently making it impossible to find pitch.”
Back in May, Huey Lewis appeared on NBC’s The Today Show and discussed the cancellation of his and the News’ 2018 summer tour following his diagnosis with Meniere’s disease. The disease, for which there is no cure, can improve. He explained the exact moment he realized something was terribly wrong: “As I walked to the stage, it sounds like there was a jet engine going on. I knew something was wrong. I couldn’t find pitch — distorted, nightmare. The bass goes (makes crunching sound) — it’s literally noise. It’s cacophony. Even though I can hear you, we can talk, I can talk on the phone — but I can’t sing. I can’t hear music. So, y’know, I can do everything but what I love to do (laughs) the most.”
Huey Lewis & The News will next perform on May 26th in Avila Beach, California The 26th Annual Avila Beach Blues Festival at the Avila Beach Golf Resort.
