Senator Seward Responds to Governor Cuomo During Cortland Visit

While Governor Cuomo’s speech from yesterday makes headlines statewide, Senator James Seward was in Cortland this morning laying out points for his own legislative agenda.

In response to Cuomo’s Executive Budget and State of the State address, Seward had this to say:

“It was a rousing speech, but once again it was centered on things that are unrelated to the spending plan and had very little mention of our upstate concerns and those of everyday New Yorkers.”

Now in his 17th term at the Senate, Seward is the ranking member of the Finance Committee–an assignment that is brand new to him this year.

Still, he assured residents today that he and other Senate Republicans stand ready to lead what they call a ‘Real Solutions’ budget plan for all New Yorkers.

The plan focuses on three basic principles:

  • Balancing the budget without any new taxes or fees and providing real tax relief to New Yorkers;
  • Making the state more affordable to give middle-class taxpayers a chance to succeed and get ahead;
  • Revitalizing the New York economy so residents can find good pay, better opportunities and the ability to raise a family.

Seward’s visit to Cortland is the first of several stops he will make in District 51 today (January 16).
