Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport was one of dozens of locations across the country yesterday (December 13) that received an anonymous email bomb threat. Several schools and businesses in Syracuse received a similar threat, including the university.
Officials from the Ithaca airport say their threat came in around 1:00 yesterday afternoon.
In accordance with its emergency plan, the airport immediately notified the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office and federal authorities.
Law enforcement quickly searched the terminal and confirmed that the facility was secure.
The FBI and local law enforcement later deemed all of yesterday’s threats to be hoaxes and without credibility.
They say they were meant for disruption and possibly money, as each threat demanded $20,000 in bitcoin in order to call off the alleged attack. Police say none of the locations who received threats agreed to pay this ransom.
Investigation continues nationwide into the potential source and motive for this seemingly organized wave of induced chaos.
