State Invests $5 Million To Help Victims Of Sexual And Domestic Abuse

Local News

The New York State Office of Victim Services recently invested $5 million to allow the State University of New York to supply and distribute “comfort bags” to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.

The initiative is part of Gov. Cuomo’s 2016 “SUNY’s Got Your Back” campaign.

225,000 bags will be given to hospitals, shelters and rape crisis centers across the state for those who arrive seeking help.

Each comfort bag contains essential personal care items to help victims with self-care, including soap, a toothbrush and toothpaste, a comb and deodorant — a pen, notepad, a stress ball and an affirming message from a volunteer.

The bags also contain vital information about the rights and services available to the victim.
