New York was ranked the fifth riskiest state in the nation in terms of identity theft in 2017.
According to a new report from ASecureLife.com, New York was ranked one of the worst states in terms of both average loss per victim and amount of losses per capita.
The report showed the average amount stolen per person to be just short of $6,000.
Despite the significant total amount stolen, if each resident paid equally to cover those losses, each would owe just over a single quarter.
The best ways to protect yourself from identity theft include monitoring your online accounts and keeping passwords fresh and secure.
