Homer Police have reported the possible presence of fishers in the area, which are large carnivorous members of the weasel family known to prey on small animals like rabbits and other rodents.
A resident on Burgett Drive reported observing and hearing a fisher last Thursday near the neighborhoods of Burgett Drive and Bedford Drive in Homer.
Fishers are typically nocturnal and not normally aggressive towards humans, according to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.
However they are still wild animals and should not be approached. There have also been rare reports of fishers attacking cats and dogs that were left outside at night.
Remember to bring your pets in at night and to stay as aware as possible of what’s in your backyard.
