New York State Police and local police agencies handed out over 1000 tickets to drivers for passing stopped school buses.
This year’s edition of Operation Safe Stop resulted in 1,186 tickets on a single day. Police issued 1,484 tickets for other moving violations during the high visibility enforcement.
A ticket could cost up to $400 for a first offense, plus a court surcharge and five points on a driver’s license.
Authorities said an estimated 50,000 motorists pass school buses in New York state each day.
