Welfare Fraud Arrests Include Woman From Harford, Man from Cortland

Welfare fraud is the charge against Tamara Torrey, 54, of Harford.

Cortland County Sheriff’s Investigator Sgt. Jason Newcomb reports her arrest Monday on felony Welfare Fraud and Grand Larceny charges.

Police say that back in December, Torrey failed to provide information on her income to Cortland County DSS, and received more than $1,100 in benefits she wasn’t entitled to.

Torrey has a court date today (Wednesday).

On Wednesday morning, word of another Welfare Fraud arrest.

Cortland County Sheriff’s Investigator Sgt. Jason Newcomb says Rodney Westfield, 42, of Cortland was arrested Tuesday, following an investigation dating to January and February.

According to Newcomb, Westfield didn’t report his income and job information to DSS as required, and received more than $350 in benefits he shouldn’t have.

Westfield was released, to answer to Welfare Fraud and Petit Larceny charges in Cortland City Court on June 27.
