Paul Simon’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ Makes Tour Premiere

Music News

It only took Paul Simon 14 shows to finally perform what’s arguably his biggest hit. Although Simon has been playing only four Simon & Garfunkel songs in the current “farewell tour” setlists — including the show’s opening and closing numbers — the duo’s six-week chart-topping behemoth “Bridge Over Troubled Water” has been conspicuously absent from the shows. Simon finally tacked the 1970 classic during his Sunday night show (June 10th) outside of Detroit at Clarkston, Michigan’s DTE Energy Music Theatre.

Paul Simon recalled that upon writing “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” the magnitude of the creative accomplishment barely registered: “All I can say is at the time I thought, ‘That’s better than I usually do.’ No concept at all about what is magical about inspiration. And I don’t think about inspiration at all. I don’t believe that you need inspiration. I don’t say, ‘I’m gonna wait around till some inspiration comes.'”
