A man from Cortland was sentenced Thursday for his guilty plea to a felony charge of Attempted Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Under terms of a plea agreement with the court, Rodney Paro, who is 48, was sentenced as a second felony offender to 3-1/2 years in state prison, then two years of probation.

Paro was one of seven people arrested on October 27, 2017 when members of the Cortland County Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at a home on Denti Way in Cortland. Task Force Lt. Todd Caufield said police found cocaine, marijuana, a rifle, and an estimated $5,000 cash.

Paro lived at the home with two of those arrested.

Prior to sentencing, Cortland County Court Judge Julie Campbell noted that Paro’s involvement with the New York State Division of Youth started when he was ten years old. She recounted his three terms in state prison, and eight local jail terms. He’s been arrested 20 times, with five felony charges.

According to Judge Campbell, Paro has been paroled twice, served a term of probation, and received one conditional discharge, all tied to his mental health and substance abuse concerns.

Paro affirmed in court Thursday that he had no intention to appeal.
