Heart’s Ann Wilson Details Upcoming Solo Covers Album

Music News

Ann Wilson’s latest solo project away from Heart is gaining steam. Ultimate Classic Rock reported that the upcoming covers set, titled Songs For The Living, Vol. 1, is set for a summer release — although a definitive track selection and hard street date are still in the works. Wilson has a few solo dates on the books over the next two months, before opening for Jeff Beck and Paul Rodgers on their joint “Stars Align” tour throughout July and August.

Wilson spoke about the eagerly awaited covers collection: “It’s a project very dear to me — a collection of songs by artists who have departed in the last several years, including Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, Tom Petty, Chris Cornell, and Amy Winehouse to name a few. I feel these souls have made a real, lasting contribution to the art of the popular song and to honor them is my deepest pleasure. Once again I am pushing my limits as a singer and it is thrilling work. It’s my way of showing gratitude for these amazing expressions in words and music. This record was made in the old school way. . . on an actual tape recorder, so the sound is vibrant, present and powerful. This sound will not just massage the listener’s ego, it will stoke their heart and soul.”

Although Wilson is still in the recording process, three songs are already in the can, Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me,” the Eagles’ “Life In The Fast Lane,” and Amy Winehouse’s “Back To Black.”

Heart fans might just have to get used to not seeing sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson on the same stage anytime soon, as the pair deals with some serious family issues before making music together: “Right now, Heart is on hiatus, and that’s all I know, really. We’re not gonna give ourselves a deadline when we have to get back into Heart. That’s all I can say about it, really. Y’know, Heart was started back in the ’70s in an atmosphere of super high ideals, and about it being real and about it being, y’know, authentic. So, I really don’t want to see it get to a point of being numb or automatic, or just a cash cow, y’know? That’s just immoral to me.”
