Sting credits his love and admiration of reggae for being the key element in his new album with Jamaican-American musician/singer and DJ Shaggy. The album, called 44/876, drops on April 20th — marking Sting’s first studio set since the 2016 Top 10 hit, 57th & 9th. The pair’s lead single “Don’t Make Me Wait” has already garnered attention and great reviews.
Sting told us that in some ways the coolest results come from the unexpected: “Surprise is the most important element (laughs) in music or in any musical adventure. I’m always happy when people say they’re surprised — ’cause you’re right, it kinda happened spontaneously without much forethought and we were just having fun. And then we realized after three weeks of just having fun, we actually had something that was looking like a record. So, we did it in six weeks, and it was just based on a rapport and a sense of enjoyment.”
Sting will next perform on April 27th at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
