Homer High had one wrestler in the Section III Division II finals Saturday night at OCC. 4th ranked Ryan Morse lost a 6-1 decision to the top seed from Chenango Forks. Homer as a team finished 13th with 51 total points.
Cortland won five of the six final weight classes, including two decisions over nationally ranked wrestlers, to defeat Oswego, 18-14, on the road Saturday afternoon.
The nationally seventh-ranked Geneseo men’s hockey team beat Cortland State 6-1 Saturday night. Oswego beat the SUNY Cortland women 4-1.
The Tompkins Cortland Community College women’s basketball teams beat SUNY Adirondack Saturday for their 5th straight win, 85-66. The men lost their 7th straight, 85-77.
The SUNY Cortland Men’s basketball team beat Buffalo St. 105-88. The women’s team lost to Buffalo St. 61-53
Four different Cortland gymnasts won events as the Red Dragons defeated visiting Rhode Island College, 185.85-179.30, in a dual meet at Corey Gym.
The SUNY Cortland Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams both beat Fredonia Saturday. 179-117 for the men. The Women’s team won 173-110.
Erin Hamlin begins the end of her luge racing tonight at the Olympics. The 31-year old woman from Remsen in Oneida County has had some success with 23 World Cup medals, two world championships, and an Olympic bronze medal. Her final competition is in four-heats, two on Monday, two on Tuesday. She says she’s retiring, and plans to be married this summer.
Pittsford skiier Morgan Schild was eliminated from the first final round of the women’s moguls early Sunday morning. The top 12 skiiers make it to round two. Schild finished in 15th place in her first Olympics. She started skiing at Bristol Mountain.
The Indianapolis Colts hired a Super Bowl offensive coordinator to be their new head coach after all. After the Patriots’ Josh McDaniels turned down the job, the Colts have hired Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich as their new head coach.
The Chicago Cubs and pitcher Yu Darvish have agreed on a $126 million, six-year contract.
Alex Bowman turned in a lap of 195.644 miles per hour in Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s former number-88 Chevrolet to win the pole for the Daytona 500. Denny Hamlin will start alongside Bowman on the front row with the rest of the lineup to be set by Thursday’s qualifying races.
