“It was a little bit exciting,” said Tina Wheeler, a Kwik Fill employee. “We were getting ready to do shift change when we heard a loud crash, like somebody had hit something. So we went outside to look and we saw that the guy had come through and hit the gas pumps. Automatically, we have to shut down the gas pumps so that there’s no leak.”
Wednesday night at a little past 10 pm, a Jeep SUV took ran into a gas pump and knocked it off its base, but the safety gear worked.
There was no fire, according to employee Gerald Lockwood. Reporter: “When a car hits a gas pump in a movie, you get a big explosion.” Gerald Lockwood, Kwik Fill employee: “Not here, though. All the safety equipment that we’ve got is pretty good.”
According to the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department, the driver was leaving Cortland Estates and crossed Tompkins Street at McLean Road, possibly following a family argument and a medical problem.
The driver not only ran into the pump, but police say he hit a woman before he crossed Tompkins Street. Police say she had a minor leg injury.
The driver was eventually taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. Sheriff’s Captain Rob Derksen told us the man – whose name was not released – was in Critical but Stable condition.
