Three-Hour Elvis Presley Doc Coming To HBO On April 14th

Music News

The eagerly awaited Elvis Presley HBO documentary Elvis Presley: The Searcher will premiere on April 14 on HBO. The press release for the doc was posted on Graceland.com, and reads in part: “This three-hour, two-film presentation focuses on Elvis Presley the musical artist, taking the audience on a comprehensive creative journey from his childhood through the final 1976 ‘Jungle Room’ recording sessions. The films include stunning atmospheric shots taken inside Graceland, Elvis’ iconic home, and feature more than 20 new, primary source interviews with session players, producers, engineers, directors and other artists who knew him or who were profoundly influenced by him. The documentary also features never-before-seen photos and footage from private collections worldwide, and includes an original musical score composed by Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready.” Among the high profile musicians contributing to the film are Bruce Springsteen, Robbie Robertson, Emmylou Harris, and the late-Tom Petty”

Elvis Presley: The Searcher was directed by Bruce Springsteen’s longtime filmmaker, Thom Zimny and produced by Springsteen’s manager Jon Landau, Priscilla Presley, and original “Memphis Mafia” member Jerry Schilling, who now serves as the president of the Beach Boys’ Brother Records’ Inc. Priscilla, Landau, and Zimny will be among the film’s principals discussing the doc in March at the South By Southwest Festival.

Lindsey Buckingham credits hearing Elvis in 1956 as the motivating factor that led him to becoming a musician: “Like many people my age, y’know, I was quite young, I was always interested in music, and I was listening to what we all would refer to as our ‘parent’s music.’ So, when my older brother brought home (the single of) ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ — it’s not a unique story, but it was just a mind-blowing revelation in terms of this kind of explosive spirit that just kind of washed over that whole generation.”

A new album, billed as a “musical companion” to Elvis Presley: The Searcher, will be released on April 6th in both digital and physical configurations.
