Queen, Neil Diamond, & Tina Turner Set For Lifetime Achievement Grammys

Music News

Queen, Tina Turner, and Neil Diamond are among the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award honorees. In addition, the Recording Academy has announced that Lifetime Achievement awards will go to Emmylou Harris, legendary L.A. session drummer Hall Blaine, Louis Jordan, and the Meters. Concert promoter Bill Graham, record exec Seymour Stein, and composer John Williams will receive the Trustees Award. Studio innovators Tony Agnello and Richard Factor are the Technical Grammy Award recipients. Grammy.com posted: “A special award presentation ceremony and concert celebrating the Special Merit Awards honorees will be held in summer 2018. Additional details regarding the ceremony will be announced.”

Neil Portnow, President/CEO of the Recording Academy, said in a statement announcing the recipients: “This year’s Special Merit Awards recipients are a prestigious group of diverse and influential creators who have crafted or contributed to some of the most distinctive recordings in music history. These exceptionally inspiring figures are being honored as legendary performers, creative architects, and technical visionaries. Their outstanding accomplishments and passion for their craft have created a timeless legacy.”

Shortly before his 1991 death, Freddie Mercury looked back at Queen’s storied career that had not only spanned — but incorporated — prog, glam, punk, and new wave: “I must say, I didn’t really think we were gonna last that long. I mean you never think about it; like, you don’t get up every morning and think, ‘My God, this is going to be over.’ You just carry on and come up with fresh ideas and think about what to do. So, as long as we don’t take it too seriously. Earlier on, we used to take it very seriously and I think it got a bit too serious. Now, I just thought to myself, we should try to inject some fun into it, y’know?”
