Assemblywoman Lifton Speaks Out Against Lower Teacher Standards

Local News

It’s a “slap in the face” to the process of educating teachers at SUNY Cortland.

Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton

One of our area Assembly members, Democrat Barbara Lifton, doesn’t like a SUNY proposal that she believes would lower standards for teachers.

Lifton, who says she is a certified teacher, wrote a letter to the SUNY Charger Schools Institute against a plan that would allow charter schools to hire uncertified teachers, and to allow the charters to set up their own certification programs.

Lifton says this would create an inferior workforce.

Lifton adds – the charters say they can’t find enough teachers for their “high-quality” schools, but in her experience, “teachers are normally eager to teach in good schools.”
