According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, one of its officers saved two eaglets after their nest was toppled by thunderstorms.
Officer Tom Fernandes was called on May 19 to the Town of Preble for a report of a bald eagle’s nest on the ground 60-feet below its onetime perch.
The DEC report indicates that Fernandes expected to find carcasses, but was surprised to discover two unscathed eaglets very much alive.
Working with Bonnie Parton from the DEC Wildlife Division, they attached a large wicker basket as a replacement nest as high as they could in the tree.
The eaglets were banded and placed in the basket to await the return of the adult eagle.
