Multiple grass and brush fires kept local fire departments busy this weekend. A burn ban is effect until mid may.
Property owners are reminded that there is an open burn ban in place until May 14th.
A carelessly discarded cigarette or backyard campfire can quickly turn into a wildfire that scorches acres of property or worse burns down a home.
The Willet, Marathon, and Cincinnatus Fire Departments all responded to brush fires Sunday. One fire was reported to have burnt up to 2 acres of property.
While it may feel and look like spring, the landscape is covered in dead dry grass, which burns quickly and easily. With the readily available tinder, a spark coupled with high winds create the perfect opportunity for a fire that can get out of control quickly.
In addtion, residents are reminded that it is illegal to burn trash at any time during the year. There are some exceptions for farmers.
