SUNY Cortland Gymnastics

Sophomore Rachel Filipski of Lancaster and senior Meghan Cobb from Hobe Sound, FL each won individual events as Cortland opened its women’s gymnastics season with a 185-30-183.75 dual-meet loss to visiting Brockport.

Filipski won vault with a 9.70 and also placed second on floor exercise with a 9.65. She was the lone all-around competitor at the meet and recorded a score of 35.95. Cobb won uneven bars with a 9.375.

Cortland will travel to New Haven, CT, on Sunday for a tri-meet with West Chester University (Pa.) and host Southern Connecticut State University, both Division II squads.

Co-Wrestler Of The Week

Cortland senior Colin Barber of Westfield, NJ was selected as the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) Co-Wrestler of the Week for the week ending January 8. He shared the award with Ithaca’s Carlos Toribio.

Barber posted a 4-0 record last weekend at the North/South Duals, hosted by Ursinus College. All of Barber’s victories came via major decisions (8-14 point margins).

Cortland will compete at the 16-team Budd Whitehill Duals Friday and Saturday at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa.

SUNYAC Basketball Player Of The Week

SUNY Cortland sophomore guard Justin Cooper of Pine Plains/Stissing Mountain was named the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 8.

This is the second time that Cooper has won the award this season.

Cooper averaged 19.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game in a 2-2 week for the Red Dragons. He shot 10-of-10 from the field and hit all five of his free throws during a 27-point, 9-rebound effort in a win over New Paltz. The 10-for-10 field goal shooting is the best perfect game from the floor by a Cortland player since complete individual shot attempts were first tracked in the early 1980s. The previous bests were 8-for-8 efforts by Kevin McMahon versus New Paltz during the 2013-14 season and Frank Hodge against Potsdam in the 1995-96 season.

Cortland (9-4, 4-2 SUNYAC) will play at Potsdam Friday at 5:30 p.m. and at Plattsburgh Saturday at 2 p.m. in SUNYAC games.
