When rescuers arrived they found heavy flames in the office building at the motel and second fire in a first floor room on the other side of the complex.
There was no one inside either building when rescuers arrived. The Motel has been closed and abandoned for at least two years.
Due to multiple points of origin the fire has been labeled suspicious at this time, local police agencies along with state and local fire investigators were on the scene.
Homer, Cortland, Cortlandville, and Preble Fire Departments all responded to the scene. Due to the heavy water demand placed on hydrants in the area additional water was pumped from the Tioughnioga river which runs behind the motel.
Route 11 is closed at the intersection of Copeland Ave. in the Village of Homer all the way to Fisher Ave.
Recently, the Village of Homer and the Town of Cortlandville had been in talks with the property owner to have the buildings torn down but no agreement had been reached.
