Standoff Following Homicide In Ithaca Ends Peacefully

The man wanted for the fatal shooting of a 52-year old UPS driver from Candor is in police custody Thursday afternoon.

Police briefed the media at 11 am Thursday about a 12:50 am homicide in the parking lot of the Ithaca WalMart.

Witnesses say the gunman drove over his victim as he fled.

Police used witness descriptions of the vehicle and spotted it on Rt 13 in Cayuga Heights.

The gunman wouldn’t stop. He turned off of Rt 13 in the Town of Dryden at Rt 366 and went to his home.

Tompkins County Sheriff Ken Lansing confirmed to reporters that once the gunman got out of his vehicle, he fired a shot at officers from a long gun he carried.

Police closed Rt 366 and evacuated neighbors for their safety.Ithaca Police Chief John Barber told reporters that during the hours that passed, an officer was able to break into the home and place a robot operated by a negotiator.

Names of the victim or suspect were not released. So far police have won’t say if they know of any motive or connection between the shooter and the UPS worker that was killed or why the shooting took place at the Ithaca WalMart.
