The flag remains at half-staff at Dryden Schools in memory of Kaylee Wacht, 11, of Freeville, or “Boots,” as her friends called her.

She was one of two Dryden students hit by a pickup truck on a dark stretch of Sheldon Road in the town of Dryden Sunday night, a little after 5 pm.

The other student, Kristin Shevalier, 14, also from Freeville, was released Monday night from Upstate University Medical Center in Syracuse. She was treated for arm and head injuries, according to police.

New York State Police say they continue to investigate the accident, but don’t expect to charge the driver of the pickup as of this time.

Grief counselors were at Dryden schools, and the community is rallying to support the family.

Students will create cards for the family, as everyone tries to cope with the sad news.

A GoFundMe page has generated more than $6,500 for funeral expenses as of mid-morning Tuesday.

Kaylee’s mom, Kimberly, offered thanks to the community:

“My daughter was so full of life, an awesome artist and very good at cheer. She was the light of my life and I would do anything to have her back. I want to thank you all for everything. It’s hard to have except the realization that she is gone. I don’t want to move on without her by my side but I am doing what I have to for my other children. She was a great daughter, an awesome sister, a perfect cousin, and my bestest friend ever.”
