Harvest Season Unfolds Across New York State

This week’s crop report from the USDA New York stats office:

  • Winter wheat planting continues
  • Corn silage harvest is complete in some areas
  • Soybean yields are described as low to good
  • Apple-harvestApple harvest is nearly finished for Honeycrisp or Gala varieties. McIntosh are next, with Empire, Cortland and Macoun apples soon
  • Vineyards are still harvesting grapes for white wines, yields said to be average or better

USDA offered some notes on grains in New York.

  • Oat production is up 42% from 2015, but the bushels per acre is down a bit
  • 60,000 acres were harvested and that is up 50% from 2015
  • Winter wheat production this year is up 23% from last, and the average yield per acre is a new record high
