Cortland County may join the effort to keep more money from handling the business of the state DMV.
Currently, the county is allowed to keep 12.7% of the state fees it collects, a percentage that hasn’t changed since 1999.
At the Thursday morning meeting of the Cortland County Legislature’s Judiciary and Public Safety committee, members will be asked to support a State Senate effort to raise the county’s share of these transactions to 25%.
The committee may also consider creating a temporary position at the DMV, lasting until August, coinciding with a longtime employee’s retirement.
If approved, both items would be added to the agenda for the next full legislature meeting.
