Cornell Community Grieves the Loss of President Garret

Local and Sate leaders released messages of condolence yesterday following the announcement that Cornell University President Elizabeth Garret lost her battle with cancer Sunday.

Garrett died Sunday about a month after being diagnosed with colon cancer, she was 52 years old.

Garrett was inaugurated as Cornell’s 13th and first female president Sept. 18th. She took office July 1st, 2015.

Governor Cuomo released a statement regarding Garret’s passing along with State Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton, Tompkins Cortland Community College President Carl Haynes and Tompkins County Legislative Chair Mike Lane.

Cuomo called Garret a visionary leader who was wholeheartedly committed to furthering the education and growth of those around her.
