Maple Syrup producers in 9 states, including New York, are demanding the Food and Drug Administration stop companies from labeling foods as maple when they don’t contain the real thing.
Maple producers say products such as Quaker Oats Maple & Brown Sugar Instant Oatmeal and Hood maple walnut ice cream are among misbranded products that do not contain real maple syrup in violation of FDA labeling regulations.
The chair of the Vermont Maple Sugar Makers Association said maple syrup is a premium product and sweetener and companies are trying to trick consumers into purchasing products that contain the high-end sweetener without the ingredient being present. The deception hurts consumers and maple producers.
Maple syrup has become a $30 million a year industry here in New York, in 2014 New York produced over 570,000 gallons of maple syrup.
