Local News

Influenza is prevalent in New York, and health-care workers not vaccinated for the flu are now required to wear surgical or procedure masks when dealing with patients.

The State Health Department made the announcement Thursday, saying tests show that the flu is now widespread across New York. Testing confirmed influenza in 44 counties and in New York City.

New York has had 817 flu-related hospitalizations so far this winter season, and no pediatric deaths from flu.

Over the last three seasons, there have been 26 pediatric flu deaths in New York and an average of 9,966 flu-related hospitalizations each season, the health department said.

The flu season runs from October through May, usually peaking in February, the agency said.
