It’s official, the almost annual Whitney Point Crappie Derby has been called off this year due to a lack of ice.
The 2016 Crappie Derby was scheduled for Feb. 13 on the Whitney Point Reservoir.
Currently, ice on the reservoir is about 7 to 9 inches thick. Organizers say the ice needs to be 10-12 inches thick to ensure a safe event.
The derby is put on each year by the Whitney Point Sportsmen’s Association and the Broome County Parks Department.
In year’s past, the derby has drawn as many as 8,000 anglers.
