Republican Congressional Candidate George Phillips Campaigns in Cortland

Republican George Phillips of Broome County was in Cortland yesterday.

Phillips announced earlier that is he is running replace retiring Congressman Richard Hanna in the 22nd Congressional District.

Phillips is a history teacher at Seton Catholic High School in Binghamton. He lost a tight race for Congress against long time Democratic representative, Maurice Hinchey, back in 2010.

Phillips stopped the Cortland County Republican headquarters on Port Watson Street Thursday he said his focus is on the economy.

Phillips says he is running on a “Jack Kemp”-style platform. Kemp is the late Congressman and vice presidential candidate known for supply-side economic policies. Phillips says he has worked on policy research with the Jack Kemp Foundation.

Phillips faces a primary challenge from Republican State Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney of Oneida County. Democrat David Gordon also of Oneida County has declared his candidacy.
