Schools across New York, including districts right here in Cortland County are owed millions of dollars in state aid.
According to figures compiled by the Alliance for Quality Education and the Public Policy and Education Fund of New York, the state owes school districts statewide $4.8 billion. Of that, 72 percent would go to high-need school districts like those here in Cortland County.
The authors looked at how much money is owed in each state assembly and senate district.
Schools in Republican State Senator Jim Seward’s district, which includes Cortland County are owed or $60 million dollars.
In republican Assemblyman Gary Finch’s district which covers the bulk of Cortland County schools are owed $32.7 million. Assemblywoman Barbra Lifton covers the rest of Cortland County and Tompkins County schools in her district fare better they are owed $13 million.
The report urges Governor Cuomo to consider adding more money for schools in his executive budget which comes out Wednesday.
