$7,700 In Welfare Fraud Uncovered, Man From Cortland Arrested

For 15 months, Corey Sims, 29, of Cortland received a total of $7,700 in benefits that he wasn’t entitled to.

Cortland County Sheriff’s Investigator/Sgt. Jason Newcomb says an investigation led to Sims’ arrest Thursday.

The charges filed against Sims are listed below.

According to Sgt. Newcomb, from November 2016 until January 2018 Sims didn’t report household income and filed fraudulent documents with the Cortland County Department of Social Services.

Sims was arraigned and released until his next appearance scheduled on May 2.

Charges:

  • Offering a False Instrument for Filing – felony (3 counts)
  • Welfare Fraud – felony
  • Grand Larceny – felony
