46% of Crashes Involving Weather Occur in Winter Says AAA – Drivers Offered Tips to Stay Safe
AAA says as the winter weather has arrived, along with freezing temperatures, drivers are being reminded to take necessary precautions before going out on the road and while driving. According to AAA, 46% of crashes that involve bad weather happen in winter, making it the worst time of the year for driving in dangerous conditions.
Drivers should brush off their car of any snow before heading out. AAA says they should also ensure their wipers are free of ice and allow themselves some extra time getting to their destination.
“In weather like this, preparation is everything,” said AAA WCNY Dispatch Manager Dan Fisher. “Before you head out, check the weather forecast along your route, make sure you have a full tank of gas, emergency supplies, and a charged phone. If possible, stay home until conditions clear up.”
When encountering snowy conditions, AAA says, it’s best to follow the top three safety tips. Those are slowing down, increasing space between your vehicle and other vehicles, and braking, then turning. Drivers are also reminded to keep an eye on their car battery as it can lose a third of its power in freezing temperatures. Signs that a car battery is nearing the end of its life include the vehicle cranking slowly when trying to start, grinding, clicking or buzzing when the ignition is on, vehicle stalling, dim headlights (but brighter when the driver revs the engine) and the battery is over 3 years old.
