Just after 2:30 in the afternoon on Sunday, the Virgil Fire Department said in a press release they received a direct call of a chicken coop fire on Washington Street in Virgil. Information reported was a 20X12 pole barn on fire that was near another barn.

Virgil Fire responded and requested additional tanker trucks from both the Dryden Fire Department and Cortlandville Fire Department in the event the fire extended to the main barn. Firefighters worked to protect any exposures and extinguished the fire. Mutual aid was canceled by Virgil Fire just before 2:50, the fire department said in a release.

An investigation into the cause of the fire found it was believed to have started by a heat lamp. Virgil Fire says about 40 to 50 chickens died from the fire, only one made it out.
