Three people were recently charged in relation with two separate animal cruelty cases in Cortland County.
The first deals with a couple from Freetown who reportedly tried to castrate their own dog at home.
Rebecca S. Lovejoy, 37, and Shane W. Banks, 45, face one count each of animal cruelty.
The Cortland County SPCA investigated a complaint about an older adult male dog belonging to Banks that had been “banded” in preparation of the procedure.
Officials say the dog was in pain and taken to the Cornell Companion Animal Hospital Emergency Center for treatment.
SPCA investigators also charged 37-year-old Betty Rogers, of Cortlandville, in a separate case.
A veterinarian contacted authorities upon treating her cat for a deeply embedded collar in its neck, which required surgery to remove.
All three defendants from both cases were issued appearance tickets for their crimes.
