On Monday, March 6th, around 6:08pm a call came in for a reported structure fire in an apartment above Garcia’s Mexican Grocery at 139 Main Street in the City of Cortland.
Cortland firefighters arrived with smoke and flames showing from the roof of the two story building. A second alarm was called for assistance from Homer, McGraw, Cortlandville and Virgil Fire Departments.
Due to the intensity of the fire and weakening structure, firefighters were evacuated from the building. All occupants were safely evacuated from the building.
The fire was under control around 7:15pm. The City of Cortland Fire Department stated in a press release the building suffered significant fire damage on the second floor, attic and rood area with water damage throughout. The residents in the apartments above the store are currently being assisted by the Red Cross.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown and the investigation is ongoing with assistance from the NYS Office of Fire Prevention and Control Fire Investigators. Fire crews were on scene until a little after midnight.
No injuries were reported for any of the residents or firefighters.
