24th Annual YWCA of Cortland’s Girls Day Out Happening This Saturday – Space Still Available
Local girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to trade a standard Saturday for a day of engineering, music, and leadership. The YWCA Cortland has announced its 24th Annual Girls Day Out, scheduled for this Saturday, March 7, from 9:30 am to 3 pm at Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3). The event arrives just one day before International Women’s Day, serving as a local celebration of female achievement and a launchpad for future leaders.
According to Brenna Ricci, YWCA Cortland’s Community Wellness Director, the day is designed to engage and motivate young women at a critical age. Ricci noted that the programming aims to equip participants with the tools necessary to navigate the world as “equal, powerful, and unstoppable” individuals. Proceeds from the $25 registration fee will directly benefit the YWCA’s Wellness program, ensuring continued support for community health initiatives.
The event kicks off with an interactive career fair featuring over 20 local women professionals from diverse fields, including engineering, nursing, and farming. Following the fair, participants will rotate through three specialized workshops designed for high engagement. Crystal Theesfeld of TST BOCES P-TECH Academy will lead an “Engineering Challenge” where girls must collaborate to tunnel under a simulated Cayuga Lake, while Meg Perioli will host a high-energy “DanceFIT” session to build physical confidence. Additionally, Melissa Simmons will lead “Ukulele 101,” a beginner-friendly class where girls will learn basic chords and leave with the ability to play several songs.
To cap off the afternoon, participants can choose between a pool party at the TC3 facility or a creative session making friendship bracelets. This year’s event is presented by Byrne and Cargill Deicing Solutions, marking the fourth year of hosting by TC3 and the second year of collaboration with TST BOCES P-TECH Academy.
Online pre-registration is available at cortlandywca.org until March 6 at 12:00 pm, though day-of registration will also be accepted at the venue. For more information, interested families can contact Alyssa Wheeler at 607-753-9651 ext. 145.
