$200 Million Announced For Funding For Zero-Emission Buses in State
Governor Kathy Hochul has announced an additional $200 Million in available funding for school districts and bus operators to help make their fleets zero-emission.
This is part of the second installment of funding from the $4.2 billion Bond Act. The New York School Bus Incentive Program (NYSBIP) distributes the funding, which provides support for modifying buses to become electric or the purchase of new ones whilst also allowing charging infrastructure. More than 75 school districts have applied, requesting over 350 buses; 51 of those requests come from disadvantaged communities.
“Paving the way for zero-emission school buses not only cleans our air, it protects the health and wellbeing of our students,” said Hochul. “With increased funding for schools to transition to clean transportation options, we are reducing harmful emissions and pollution, helping to ensure that both students and residents are breathing clean, fresh air and enjoying healthier environments to live, work and do business.”
High-need and disadvantaged communities will have access to larger funding amounts, as they are defined as priority districts by the New York State Climate Justice Working Group criteria. All schools that complete their fleet electrification plans will become eligible for higher funding.
