Tompkins County Health Department reports two more COVID-19 related deaths of fully vaccinated elderly residents.

Both passed away on Monday (September 13) at Cayuga Medical Center.

The fatalities follow a third death reported earlier this week that occurred on Saturday (September 11).

“Despite this, the vaccine is protecting a vast majority of people against severe illness,” said TCHD Public Health Director Frank Kruppa. “We can all keep the most vulnerable among us healthy by continuing to wear a mask while indoors around others, getting tested if we are symptomatic, and encouraging everyone around us to get vaccinated.”

Currently, there are 218 active cases and nine hospitalizations in the county.

Daily reporting from Cortland County health officials show 212 active cases and seven hospitalizations.

Of those currently infected: 66 Cortland State students who are isolating in off-campus isolation, according to the SUNY covid tracker.

The university shows a more than 7% positivity rate over the past 14 days.
