Matt Brooks: [00:00:00] Good morning. I’m Matt Brooks on X 1 0 1 oh, Waze Classic in for another edition of Happening in Homer. And with me in the studio, it’s Jeremey Barber, first assistant Chief of the Homer Fire Department. First off, Jeremey, thank you for, joining me this morning. Thank you for having me. All right. Well, it’s currently Fire Prevention Week.

It’s going on through this Saturday. Can you elaborate on what Fire Prevention Week is all about?

Jeremey Barber: Well, this year we are doing a charged into fire safety, basically lithium and ion. Batteries in your home and basically the safety of them.

Matt Brooks: Yeah, I mean, I mean we hear the, on the scanners a lot. We’ve been to fires.

Some of the scariest fires are the lithium ion battery fires. Yeah.

Jeremey Barber: And it’s a new, like I said, a new technology and there’s different ways to fight. The fires.

Matt Brooks: Right. And speaking of fighting fires, I mean the best way to, fight a fire is to prevent it in the first place. What are some of the things that families can go over?

Really regarding fire safety, making sure [00:01:00] that they’re doing the best to prevent any possible fires and, what if a fire occurs?

Jeremey Barber: Well, you should have a fire, you know, safety plan. Basically have the kids not play with matches, candles. It’s getting colder, so obviously our big problem is electric heaters leaving them on overnight and, you know, chimney fires, you know, making sure your chimney is cleaned and ready for the winter.

Matt Brooks: Yeah, this is the time where we’re still seeing some warm weather that if you haven’t gotten your chimney cleaned out. Get that appointment in. Absolutely. And I know that, you’re also gonna be doing some work around the, around the schools as well, promoting fire safety. Can you tell me about that?

Jeremey Barber: Yeah, we’re gonna go to, the pre-K through third grade starting next week. And again, gonna talk about fire safety, have an exit plan, and again, don’t play with matches and candles. That’s a safety hazard.

Matt Brooks: Yeah. Yeah. Ain’t one candle docked over and that’s all it takes.

Jeremey Barber: Correct.

Matt Brooks: Now, coming up, next [00:02:00] week, I know that, you’re gonna be having an open house and it’s gonna be, there’s gonna be some fun things to see and it’s also gonna be quite educational.

Can you tell me about, the open house?

Jeremey Barber: Yes. It’s gonna happen. 10 16. That would be next Thursday. We’re gonna have our open house from six to 8:00 PM. We’re gonna have, Cortland City Fire come in with their smokehouse. There will be cider and donuts, and we’re gonna have a tour of the station and the trucks.

And then we’re gonna have a Turkey demo, basically a frozen bird versus oil and see what happens.

Matt Brooks: Yeah, I, I’ve heard this one before. It’s, it’s definitely not something you want to do. Make sure it’s, that Turkey’s thought out is the Absolutely. The byline there now, so you got the open house, the 16th.

I know you’re gonna be going around to the schools as well. For fire prevention week, if people wanna learn more about maybe the, what’s going on at the fire department or getting that safety plan or just having more information about fire safety in general, where should people go?

Jeremey Barber: Well, [00:03:00] again, we, we have our open house and we’ll be passing out brochures.

Fire safety or you can like us on our Facebook page.

Matt Brooks: Yep. And you just look up Homer Fire Department. Home Fire Department.

Jeremey Barber: Yep.

Matt Brooks: Alright, well thank you Jeremey for taking the time outta your busy morning to stop in, talk with us about Fire Prevention Week and hope, you got some great weather coming up for that open house.

Jeremey Barber: Thank you. It’s my pleasure.

Matt Brooks: It’s been another edition to happen in Homer here on X101 Always Classic. I’m Matt Brooks.
