SUNY Cortland Commencement Capped With Regalia Gowns For 150th Year

Local News

Hundreds of students will graduate from SUNY Cortland this weekend at the end of the College’s 150th year.

What started as a class of less than a dozen students will this year feature more than 1,600.

To commemorate the special sesquicentennial celebration, they will wear bright red regalia gowns for the first in the college’s history.

Graduate students will wear traditional black caps and gowns.

The College has also replaced its first-come, first-served online ticketing system for commencement with four different ceremonies divided by academic department.

The graduate ceremony starts at 7 p.m on Friday (May 17), with undergraduate ceremonies on Saturday at 9:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Information on which department attends which ceremony can be found at

Each will be held in the Bessie L. Park 1901 Physical Education and Recreation Center Alumni Arena.

SUNY Cortland President Erik J. Bitterbaum:

“Commencement marks a moment when our students, their families and our faculty and staff pause to reflect with pride on what together they have achieved. As they have for the last century and a half, our new graduates will leave this ceremony to achieve great things in whatever they choose to pursue.”
