11 Year Old From Marathon Dies in Drowning While Fishing With Friends

Just after 4 o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday, June 22nd, emergency personnel responded to the Tioughnioga River in the area of 4139 Route 11 in the Town of Lisle in Broome County for a reported drowning.

State Police say through an investigation, it was determined an 11-year old boy from Marathon was fishing with his friends when he decided to jump into the river to swim. Troopers say it was after he jumped in when he went under the water and didn’t resurface due to the strong current.

The 11-year-olds body was found hours later at 7:15pm in approximately 8 feet deep water by the Broome County Dive Team. State Police say there were no signs of foul play and the scene was consistent with an accidental drowning.
