Six SUNY Cortland men's lacrosse players have been selected to the 2014 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Div. III All-America team. Three of those All-Americans have also been chosen to compete for the North squad in the USILA's annual North-South Senior All-Star Game on Sunday, May 25, at 10 a.m. at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. Senior midfielder Joe Slavik and junior midfielder Matt Rakoczy were second-team All-America choices.
Sophomore attack Zach Hopps and senior defenders Stephen Burke and J.T. Foltz were third-team All-Americans, while junior long-stick midfielder Patrick Brown was an honorable mention selection. Slavik, Burke and Foltz are North-South all-star game honorees. Slavik is an All-American for the third straight season. He was a first-team selection last year and a second-team choice in 2012. Rakoczy and Brown were both honorable mention All-Americans last spring.
SUNY Cortland sophomore attacker Erica Geremia and senior defender Jessica Lavelle have been chosen as 2014 Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III first-team All-Americans. Both players were named to the All-America first team for the second straight year. Geremia leads Cortland with 53 goals and 67 assists for 120 points through 22 games. In two seasons, she has already amassed 256 points (115 goals, 141 assists). The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Player of the Year, Geremia has scored five or more points in 16 games this spring, including each of Cortland's first three NCAA playoff games. Lavelle, also a starter in all 22 games to date, leads the Red Dragons with 44 caused turnovers and 38 ground balls. She's also won 10 draw controls and has helped Cortland's defense allow only 5.6 goals per game. Cortland is 22-0 and is ranked first nationally in Div. III. The Red Dragons have advanced to the NCAA Div. III Final Four for the fourth straight year and will face Trinity College (Conn.) in the national semifinals on Saturday, May 24, at 1 p.m. at Gettysburg (Pa.) College. Salisbury (Md.) and Amherst (Mass.) will play in the other semifinals, with the winners meeting Sunday for the national title.
In Boys High School Lacrosse playoff action yesterday, Homer beat Skaneateles 15-10 yesterday. The Trojans take on Lafayette next. The Lancers edged CBA 16-15 yesterday. Elsewhere, it was Cazenovia over Tully 14-4.
In Minor League Baseball yesterday, Syracuse downed Columbus 5-3 yesterday. The Chiefs will host Pawtucket tonight, weather permitting. Elsewhere, Portland beat Binghamton 2-1 last night. The B-Mets and Sea Dogs will play a doubleheader tonight at Portland.
