The nationally eighth-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team broke open a tight game with a 10-goal third quarter and held Keuka College scoreless over the final 25 minutes, 23 seconds en route to a 20-6 victory versus the Storm Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Div. III Tournament at the Stadium Complex. The 10 goals in one quarter were the first for Cortland since the Red Dragons tallied 16 in the opening quarter of a 30-0 win versus Utica/Rome on Mar. 19, 2002. Eleven different players scored at least one goal and 15 Red Dragons overall registered at least one point. Senior Tyler Chin and sophomore Zach Hopps led the offense with three goals and one assist apiece, Junior Mike Cantelli also netted three goals, senior Mike Cummings recorded two goals and two assists, junior Patrick Brown scored twice and senior Nate Garbarino and juniors Matt Rakoczy, Matt Savlov and Benjamin Dunlavey each had one goal and one assist. Junior Dieter Treusdell and freshman Nate Beresovoy (LaFayette) netted one goal each, and the Red Dragons were also awarded a team goal. Senior Joe Slavik chipped in with two assists. Junior goalie Scott Tota made two saves in 48 minutes, 11 seconds for Cortland before giving way to senior Nick Costabile, who stopped two shots over the final 11:49. The Red Dragons improved to 16-3 with their 11th straight win and recorded the 600th win in program history. Cortland will face Springfield College, a 19-13 winner over Western New England University, in an NCAA Div. III second-round game Saturday at at 5pm in Cortland.
SUNY Cortland freshman midfielder Nate Beresovoy (LaFayette) has been chosen as the 2014 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Year in a vote of the conference's coaches. In addition, Cortland placed 10 players on the All-SUNYAC squad, with seven on the first team. Sophomore attack Zach Hopps, junior midfielder Matt Rakoczy, senior midfielder Joe Slavik, junior long-stick midfielder Patrick Brown, sophomore faceoff specialist Pat Baldwin, senior defender Stephen Burke and senior defender J.T. Foltz were first-team selections. Junior midfielder Mike Cantelli, junior short-stick midfielder Luke McNaney, and junior goalie Scott Tota were named to the second team.
Also In NCAA D-3 Lacrosse, Ithaca defeated Montclair State 13-4 and will head to RIT this weekend for their second round contest.
In D-1 Lax, Bryant edged Siena 9-8 and will face Syracuse in the next round Sunday evening at the dome.
The SUNY Cortland Baseball team beat Mount St. Mary 9-3 yesterday to complete their regular season. The 31-6 Red Dragons await their assignment in this year's NCAA Tournament next. Regional selections will come out Sunday.
In Minor League Baseball yesterday, Syracuse beat Durham 6-5 in 10 innings and will conclude the series with the Bulls at Noon today. Meanwhile the B-Mets blanked New Hampshire 6-0 yesterday and will host Harrisburg tonight.
