Heartbreakers Mike Campbell Says Latest Tom Petty Album Started Out As A Blues Set
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are reeling over the success of their latest album, the newly released Hypnotic Eye, which 38 years into their recording career, amazingly, marks the band's first Number One set on the Billboard 200 album chart. The band is currently on the road in support of the new album, which is the Heartbreakers' first since 2010's blues-based Mojo collection.

Co-founding Heartbreakers guitarist and Hypnotic Eye co-producer, Mike Campbell, shed some light on how Petty and the band went about recording the new hit album: "Usually we go in to record if we’ve got five or six tunes, which could take two days or two months (laughs). Anyway, we get a set of tunes and we go in and the first batch of tunes were more blues based, I guess -- like even more blues based than even Mojo. And that was the first things we did, and then we took a break to write more songs and the new songs that came in were taking a slightly different direction than that. As it went on it seemed to transition from a hardcore blues album to more of a rock n’ roll album. The songs dictate pretty much what direction its gonna take and then once it takes that direction, the following songs were in that same vein."
