He might not have the brand name of Styx, but Dennis DeYoung is bringing his songs and voice to the masses on his current road trek. DeYoung, who plays tonight (August 21st) at Toronto, Ontario, wrote and sang lead on such band classics as "Come Sail Away," "The Best Of Times," "Rockin' The Paradise," "Babe," "Lady," "The Grand Illusion," and "Mr. Roboto," among others, before leaving the band in 1999. His solo shows feature a Styx-heavy setlist -- including his sidemen performing classic tunes written by former bandmate Tommy Shaw.
Dennis DeYoung makes no apologies for some of his Styx music being over-the-top musically: "A lot of that Styx stuff, especially the art rock-leaning stuff, was symphonic with a rock band, at least in my own mind. Y'know, people (say), 'It's pompous, it's pretentious, it's overblown' -- that's the point! Does everything have to be raw and loose?"
