Coming on September 2nd is the long-awaited individual CD release of the first two albums by power pop’s legendary Big Star. The new releases of the band’s 1972 #1 Record and 1973’s Radio City, were originally released in the early-‘90s as two-fers, and featured the band’s iconic songs by Alex Chilton and Chris Bell on the first album, with Chilton taking the lead on the Radio City -- which like #1 Record, was plagued by poor distribution becoming, like the band’s debut, one of rock’s most influential -- and least selling albums.
Both collections have now been remastered for both iTunes and 24-bit high resolution audio. R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills has contributed new liner notes for each album.
Drummer Jody Stephens, the sole surviving, member of the band's original lineup, told us that he always felt a kinship with the music that Chilton, Bell, and bassist Andy Hummel created: "I was always astonished at the songs they came up with -- and even post #1 Record and stuff with Alex -- how they connected with me. Songs were being written by Alex and Chris -- and Andy as well -- and there was this great emotional connection with me there, too."
