The Monkees -- Micky Dolenz, Mike Nesmith, and Peter Tork -- kick off their latest tour tonight (May 22nd) in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom. The trek marks the band’s third since the 2012 death of Davy Jones at the age of 66. Peter Tork chatted to Parade and spoke about playing to now third and fourth generation fans, explaining, "It’s extraordinarily gratifying. One of the things about The Monkees TV show was that, since there were no senior adult figures, the kids were able to imagine getting along in life with just their peers to help and be helped by. I believe it was an important message for the times, and remains so to this day."
Obliviously the show is bittersweet for the three bandmates, who are carrying on with Davy -- who had agreed to tour as a foursome prior to his untimely death: "Just about the first thing I did when I heard that David had passed was to play 'Daydream Believer' on the piano, but we don’t sing that song anymore; how could we? We have someone from the audience come up to sing it for us. That’s our remembrance."
Micky Dolenz told us that it was crucial that the TV show never portrayed the Monkees as the hit act they were in real life: "One of the important, I think, elements of The Monkees, the decision the producers made, which I think was very wise; on the television show the Monkees were never successful. We were always struggling for success. That's what endeared it (to) so many people, so many kids around the world that were in their garages and basements, playing and singing and trying to be a band and trying to make it. And that's what The Monkees was about."
