Elton John & James Taylor Featured On Smokey Robinson Duets Set
Elton John and James Taylor have joined forces with Smokey Robinson on his upcoming duets set, called, Smokey & Friends. Billboard reported the album, which is due out in September, is being produced by American Idol’s Randy Jackson and features Elton duetting with Smokey on the Miracles’ 1965 classic "The Tracks Of My Tears" -- a tune Elton calls "the greatest pop song ever written." James Taylor teams up with the Motown legend on "Ain’t That Peculiar" -- also from '65 -- which Smokey co-wrote with the Miracles for the late, great Marvin Gaye.
Smokey Robinson is clearly thrilled with the contributions he’s already scored for the collection: "Elton's comments about 'Tracks Of My Tears' is a huge compliment. My dream and my aim as a songwriter is fulfilled with statements like that, especially by someone like Elton who is a great songwriter himself."
The album is available for pre-order via A full tracklisting and additional artists will be announced soon.
Smokey Robinson told us that when looking back to his early Motown days, he had no idea his music would have such an enduring impact: "It always flabbergasts me, man, because, see, when you're living it, you're not conscious of the fact that this is what you're doing. You're not thinking about, 'OK, this is what I'm doing.' You're doing it for the moment. You're doing it, 'Well, hey, I'm trying to write this song right now.' But when I sat there and I look back on the history of that and the songs and the so on and so forth, it's always overwhelming to a certain degree, man."
